My name is Esther Meppelink, and together with two other women I own an escort agency in Amsterdam. One of the Corona measures was that all contact professions were prohibited. That meant that our escort agency had to close as well. Because escort is sex work, and sex work is a contact profession.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for the escorts we represent, they suddenly missed out on their extra earnings. But thankfully for them it’s only an extra earning. The Courtesan Club represents women for whom escort is a side job. They are all students, or have a good job. And they do not depend on the money they earn as an escort. And it soon turned out that that was a good thing. Because it turned out that sex work was the only contact profession excluded for a restart. Sex work could start again on September the 1st. So three and a half more months without income and no turnover.
But thankfully, during the only press conference I missed, it was announced that sex work was allowed again starting the first of July. We informed all the ladies, and gladly they were excited to start again. We informed all our customers. And it will probably be a while before we are back at the level from before corona. But the beginning is there, and we are really looking forward to it.

En dat betekende dat ook wij als escortbedrijf dicht moesten. Want escort is sekswerk, en sekswerk wordt ook beschouwd als een contact beroep.
Nou voor de escorts die we vertegenwoordigen was het natuurlijk ook heel zuur, die miste opeens hun bijverdiensten. Maar gelukkig is het voor hen een bijverdienste. The Courtesan Club vertegenwoordigt vrouwen voor wie het werk als escort bijzaak is. Ze zijn allemaal student of ze hebben een goede baan, en ze zijn niet afhankelijk van het geld dat ze als escort verdienen. En het bleek al heel snel dat dat maar goed was ook. Want het bleek dat sekswerk als enige contact beroep uitgesloten werd voor een herstart. Sekswerk zou pas op 1 september weer mogen. Dus nog drie en een halve maand zonder inkomen en zonder omzet.
Maar gelukkig, tijdens de enige persconferentie die ik niet had gevolgd was aangekondigd dat sekswerk vanaf 1 juli weer was toegestaan. We hebben de dames op de hoogte gesteld. Die gelukkig allemaal stonden te popelen om weer te beginnen. We hebben de klanten geïnformeerd. En het zal waarschijnlijk nog wel even duren voordat we weer op het niveau zitten van voor corona. Maar het begin is er, en we hebben er ontzettend veel zin in.
