My name is Marc Bongaarts, head of conservation technique at the Stedelijk Museum. It was of course a shock to us when on March 13 the message came that the museum had to close. We were about to open Nam June Paik's The Future is Now exhibition. Including the work TV Garden. This installation consists of 270 plants and a large number of monitors. But especially those plants immediately became a problem when we closed.

Because I was the only employee of conservation who was allowed to enter the museum, I had to take care of this work, among other things. Well, just did a quick calculation. I had four watering cans. I think I had to fill those watering cans eight times. And with a cart I was driving back and forth, filling it and then watering it all the time. I can really tell you that watering 270 plants is quite a challenge.

 

I actually don’t have anything with plants. And I actually find plants difficult. Almost all of the plants I've ever had died. I can hardly believe this... But there were a number of plants in it, I think it is a kind of palm-like plant. But at some point it started to bloom. I didn't understand it at all. Those plants started to do really well, and they grew like crazy. Also into the exhibition space.

But Paik’s installation is a really nice something to take care of and to work with.

Ik ben Marc Bongaarts. Hoofd behoud techniek van het Stedelijk Museum. Het was voor ons natuurlijk schrikken toen op 13 maart het bericht kwam dat het museum dicht moest. We stonden eigenlijk op het punt om de tentoonstelling The Future is Now van Nam June Paik te openen. Waaronder het werk TV Garden. De installatie bestaat uit 270 planten en een groot aantal monitoren. Maar vooral die planten werden direct een probleem toen we dicht gingen.

Omdat ik de enige medewerker van behoud en beheer was die in het museum mocht komen moest ik onder andere dit werk verzorgen. Nou ik heb het even uitgerekend. Ik had vier gieters. Die gieters moest ik denk ik een acht maal vullen. Maar dat was met dat karretje de hele tijd heen en weer rijden, vullen en dan weer water geven. Het water geven van 270 planten, dat kan ik je echt vertellen, dat is echt een uitdaging.

Ik heb eigenlijk helemaal niks met planten. En ik vind planten eigenlijk moeilijk. En de planten die ik ooit heb gehad zijn ook bijna allemaal dood gegaan. Maar ik kan het gewoon bijna niet geloven maar er zaten een aantal planten in. Volgens mij is het een soort palmachtige plant. Maar die begon op een gegeven moment ook nog te bloeien. Ik begreep er helemaal niks van. Die planten gingen het ook steeds beter doen, ze groeide ook als een tierelier. Maar ook gewoon de zaal in.

Maar de installatie van Paik was wel een heel leuk iets, dat je dat kunt verzorgen en daar mee aan het werk bent.
